My Copywriter’s Core: The Values That Shape My Business – Diligence

When I first decided to make the move into self-employment, one of the things that was
important to me was really taking the time to figure out which values matter most and how I
want to reflect them in how I work and how my business operates. In turn, it’s how those
values shape the experience clients have when they work with me.
It was strangely amusing how difficult I found this process initially. There was a lot of second-
guessing myself, stemming from my perfectionist nature and how that can lend itself to a
fear of doing and putting myself out there, worrying about how I’ll be perceived. I eventually
talked it through with my mentor, who encouraged me to approach it differently. She said to
me:
“Forget the business for a moment, think about
yourself.”
And as soon as it was reframed in terms of my traits, qualities, and what I bring to the table
and what shapes me, the decision process became smooth, as I was able to trust myself
and my instincts. I chose five qualities that I think reflect myself and thus feed into my
business naturally, and have come to think of them as my “copywriter’s core”. Each of these
blogs will discuss one of these in turn: how they shape my business and the impact they
bring for my clients, both in terms of the projects I undertake and in building our relationships.
First up, we’ll talk about diligence.
The quality that springs to most people’s minds
When I’ve casually asked colleagues, friends & family the vast and frightening question:
“What do you admire most about me?”, I was struck by how often “your diligence” came up
as the first answer, by all those groups despite having different capacities and lengths of
time for how long they’ve known me.
Diligence is defined as “careful and persistent work or effort”. When I take a moment to
reflect on why that particular adjective springs to mind, it’s easy to see: whatever I’ve done in
life, academically, personally and professionally, I’ve always wanted to do it to the best of my
ability, hold myself to a high standard, and foster relationships built on respect, trust and
warmth. I enjoy throwing myself wholeheartedly into a project, taking time and care to know
what makes my clients tick and figuring out how I can best support them, even with the
seemingly “tedious” and most time-consuming tasks. I’ve been complimented previously on
my eye for detail too, so whether you need copywriting or content creation services – my
goal is to de-stress the process, giving you your time and energy to focus on other areas.
But surely every business owner could say they
embody that quality – what makes you stand out?
I wholeheartedly believe that it’s my lived experience that lends itself well to diligence, being
one of my core values. Having a disability and how inherently that sets you up to be
underestimated, undervalued and unfortunately underrepresented in lots of areas of life,
means I’ve had to become incredibly diligent in order to succeed and be taken seriously.
That quality shines through in the work I do and my outlook on life, and I will give my best
from the start through to the end of a project, looking after your ventures just as if they were
my own.
