For the final instalment of “My Copywriter’s Core: The Values That Shape My Business”
series, I’m shining Curtain Call Consultancy’s ghost light on authenticity! Now, for a business
like mine, authenticity is first, last, and always: it sharpens the quality of the copy and
content I create, helps establish and embed trust, and is more effective in a saturated,
sometimes incredibly competitive market. Crucially, though, it’s not just me as a business
owner who will see the benefits of all that – my clients do, too. They benefit because it
changes the relationship in the sense they aren’t simply buying the words. They’re investing
in my clarity, honesty and my being grounded, all foundations of a solid business and
creative partnership.
A different kind of power
Authenticity isn’t about “oversharing” or being raw for the sake of it: I’m sharing my values,
my voice, my perspective, and my lived experience. On that basis, given the way I navigate
the world as a disabled person and disabled business owner, that alone is powerful because
it’s my strength and unique selling point. More than that, though, it’s about operating from a
place of truth, which leads to a different kind of power.
More texture & personality: I often find that when I consciously lean into my own
voice and not how I think a “copywriter” should sound, my writing becomes powerful,
more characterful and vibrant and ultimately more memorable. That is a strength not
just for me but for my clients as well.
It helps me attract the clients I work best with: Authenticity helps the “filter”
process and helps me attract the clients who actively seek out nuance, depth &
honesty.
It helps me make clearer decisions: When I’m my authentic self, I stop second-
guessing and gravitate towards projects, clients, and make business decisions that
align with my skills and values.
It helps me channel my energy where it’s needed: I’ve always found that as a
disabled person, I often face added pressure because society has preconceptions
and narratives about my capabilities, and so I feel like I need to work harder to show
up for myself, and therein prove people wrong. That can get really exhausting, so
when you’re able to be your authentic self, you have a stronger capacity for creativity,
problem-solving, and strategy!
Building trust faster: Clients will sense when you’re being authentic, or not! If you’re
authentic from the outset, you shorten that phase of “proving oneself” and I become a
partner, not merely a service provider.
Clients receive quality and effectiveness
I’ve talked about how the foundation of authenticity helps shape the positive impact on my
running of the business, but what about the clients? As a result, they’ll receive work that’s of
a higher quality and more effective!
Messages resonate more strongly: Authenticity allows you to naturally tap into
language, emotion and experience that makes your copy and content relatable and
persuasive.
Stronger brand alignment: Authenticity allows provoking questions to truly get
under the skin of a brief and what its aims are, and the things that really make a
difference to them, and therein it’s my part of my role, and my pleasure to help them
show who they are, not feel the pressure of being who they think they should be!
Authenticity fosters honesty in strategy: Being authentic encourages honesty,
including about what may not be working. The result is a clearer direction, not just
success measured by deliverables.
Creating trust for the audience: Audiences will be able to sense and react to
authenticity. Being genuine creates trust, loyalty and credibility to a brand, and that is
what will lead to greater engagement.
Keeping the content inclusive with people at the heart: When you bring your
authentic self, with lived experience, values and a point of view, you create work that
sees people, not just markets.
Both help position my business as a differentiator
By ensuring that Curtain Call Consultancy always strives for authenticity, it gives me a
competitive edge in that I can:
Stand out without “shouting”
Build a brand that feels alive
Create copy and content that carries emotional weight
Develop a reputation for honesty and integrity
Become the writer whom clients trust with their stories
Therein, authenticity is not a luxury; it’s an asset that compounds over time.
