My Copywriter’s Core: The Values That Shape My Business – Curiosity

The third element of my copywriter’s core and value that shapes my business is curiosity.
I’ve always enjoyed learning about the world and what makes people tick, and am rarely
seen without a book in my hand, be it for pleasure or research. I’ve been very privileged to
find and pursue a career path that allows me to lean into my natural and instinctive state and
marry it with my passion for writing. So, how exactly does curiosity shape my business, and
what does it mean for my clients?
One of the most valuable tools I have, and where I
lead from
Curiosity is one of the most valuable traits and tools I have working as a copywriter and
content creator. It sharpens my thinking, elevates the quality of my work, and helps me
cement the results my clients see. To achieve that goal for the client, though, curiosity is
where I must lead from the very beginning of our working relationship.
When you first contact Curtain Call Consultancy, I’ll arrange a time and date convenient to
you to book in our initial meeting – the one where I dig into your needs, you and the
business goals, so that I can better understand how you envisage the future of the business,
and how I can help you facilitate and implement that with my services. To accompany that
booking, you’ll also receive a questionnaire with some prompts and elements you might want
to think about ahead of time. However, don’t worry if you’re stuck or don’t know how to
answer – I thrive on collaborating, and we’ll work together to pinpoint what your goals and
ideas are!
After our meeting, once we’ve unpacked your needs and how I can best support you, I’ll
go away and draw up a proposal encompassing: the key points from our initial meeting and
questionnaire, any agreed deadlines, a breakdown of our services, and a quotation. This will
be emailed to you to review and suggest any further amendments or questions you have. It
must be signed, dated and returned to us before work can commence! From there, I
research, build, and shape your work to be the best it can be; and here’s where curiosity
really comes into play, because it makes my work infinitely more effective and helps it stand
out from the crowd.
Wonderful, but how exactly does it make you stand
out?
One of my favourite things I’ve learned (and continue to every day as a business owner) is
that my sense of curiosity strengthens those skills I gained throughout my academic career
and beyond, namely:
Asking better questions: You learn quickly to challenge assumptions and better explore
context so that a brief becomes more of a “why”, not simply a “what.” Considering this, you
also become adept at finding new angles and perspectives that others might miss!
That “spark” of originality: If you’re curious, it shows in your work: research is enjoyable
and means you’re able to generate fresher ideas more quickly, and that also means you
understand what works for and speaks to an audience.
You aren’t “just a writer”; you grow into a strategist: You understand that the copywriting
or content is just part of the work you do for a client. You get under the skin of a business:
the model, the customer journey and the landscape, so you’re able to help your clients
strategise for success!
The tangible outcomes for clients
Clarity in messaging: Curiosity allows you to dig into the bigger picture of a business –
reviews, data, and the nuances behind a brand. That means you have clarity on your vision and messaging, and keep content specific, relevant and engaging.
Stronger Differentiation: Curiosity helps you feel comfortable exploring what really makes
a brand different from others in the landscape, not just what they think or say. You can
really unpack your offer, your service and your values to help you shape that, and therefore
know your unique selling point inside and out, putting you in better stead to drive your
business forward.
Insight: Working with clients, you learn to spot patterns and develop a strong sense of what
works and what doesn’t, and you can tailor your approach to the client and their needs. That
level of insight can really strengthen a working relationship!
Strengthens trust and collaboration: I touched on this previously, but asking those “better”
questions help clients feel heard and understood, and thus, you are both anchored by the
same energy, expectations, and plan for the business, and you can collaborate
successfully!
Better-performing content: Deeper research, different perspectives, and ultimately
more compelling storytelling translates into better engagement, and conversations become
conversions, and brand loyalty!
